Spoiler alert: Everybody dies. This modern adaption of the 15th century morality play Everyman, follows Everybody (chosen from the cast by lottery at each performance) as they make their way to a final reckoning. Along the way, they will try to convince Friendship, Family, Strength and others to accompany them on their journey in an attempt to demonstrate that their life, Everybody’s life, has meaning. Everybody was a finalist for the 2018 Pulitzer Prize and is “theatre rather unlike anything you might have seen…” (The Huffington Post).

A cast of nine includes five actors whose roles are determined by lottery every show, meaning each performance will be one of 120 possible casting variations. This is quite literally, a different show every night.

In the safe space of a small liberal arts college, the student-led Men’s Peer Education Group works on unlearning their male privilege and unpacking questions like “What’s like the trick? To being a good guy?”. In the same meeting room, The Women’s Survivor Support Group, works on their plan to totally eradicate all sexual violence within five years. But when an incident occurs between one of the members from each group, it threatens to unravel their fundamental purpose and shake the university to its foundation. MJ Kaufman’s biting social satire casts female identifying actors as both male and female students trying to understand what it really means, and costs, to stand up and be heard.

Becky’s pregnant and frustrated. Her husband is more interested in the baby manual than her new underwear so she turns to the porn stash under the bed. As the summer heats up, a brief encounter sends her speeding downhill towards reckless abandon.

From the brilliant mind of playwright Penelope Skinner – described as Britain’s ‘leading young feminist writer’ (The Independent) — The Village Bike premiered at London’s Royal Court in 2011, where it had a sell-out, twice-extended run. It was the winner of the 2011 George Devine Award and won Skinner the Evening Standard Award for Most Promising Playwright.

Rachel Chant directs the Sydney premiere of The Village Bike, a darkly comic and uncompromising upending of presumptions about sexuality and pornography.
